Project Description

Located next to the AGO in downtown Toronto, Grange Park is a historic park - turned active outdoor space for its surrounding residents. With the growing number of residents who live close to the park, as well as visitors who might use the park occasionally, Grange Park acts as a “backyard space” for its users. Superimposition not only aims to impose a new program onto the park but also strives to maintain and extend its existing program at the same time. The Pavilion is then composed out of two mirrored forms. One being an extension of the existing program, and the other being an imposition of a new one.

Superimposition

The pavilion intends to impose its own performative program, but also strives to enhance the current conditions of the site.

Handling With Care

While the space is empty, imposing a structure on to the park may risk its purpose as an informal backyard space.

A Public Backyard

Grange park is an urban and informal backyard space to one of the highest population densities in north America.

Massing Strategy

In using two opposing forms, the pavilion can achieve its dichotomous program. Its thin-shell concrete structure allows the upper form to maintain a subtle and informal program during, while its lower foundational form supports a more distinct and formal program. The relationship between both of the two forms is then an embodiment of the coexistence between site and program.

Seamless Massing

The purpose of the upper-wing of the pavilion is to be a seamless extension of the existing park. This is achieved in elevation through its low height and thin profile.

Seamless Detail

The pavilion achieves seamlessness in detail as well. By tapering it's edges and using a compressive concrete shell, the mass can apear as thin as possible.

The Performance Space

While the upper wing of the pavilion is light and informal, the lower pit is a formal indent into the park. Moving the performance space under-ground creates a separation from the park around it helping the performance space with improved thermal comfort, wind comfort, and sonic experience.
